This is the pub to go to for real ales. They have a massive selection of British real ales and continental beers and lots of different guest ales. I kind of get the feeling that if you order lager here you may be sneered at!
Also, the food is very good. I ordered a sandwich and was presented with an absolutely doorstop - the food is simple but of a good standard.
It’s a very traditional pub, a bit like the free press in that it has no machines or music, and it works very well. Definitely a 'proper’ pub!

A cosy pub, but very much for winter time as there is no outdoor space. The real ale selection is excellent with regularly changing guest beers and Nethergates Umble on tap. It is less than ten minutes from the station, and a handy place to warm up after a long train journey. Good chips (massive bowls) but the food isn’t fantastic for vegetarians.

This is a fabulous little back street pub, 10 minutes’ walk from the railway station, which would feel perfectly at home in a country village. The interior has lowish ceilings, wooden furniture and various agricultural clutter as ornamentation, together with a small snug. Staff were friendly and efficient.

The beer selection is excellent - Everard’s Tiger Bitter and Nethergate Umbel are the regular beers (both are really lovely pints - Umbel has a coriander flavour), with 5-6 guest ales. It serves basic pub grub, and you can get a ploughmans, deep-filled sandwich or baked potato for under a fiver.

Recommended.

This is one of my favourite local pubs in the area, although as it is such a well loved local it can sometimes feel a bit like walking into a private club. However it is a very friendly crowd and you'll be chatting away with the bar staff and playing with the pub cat in no time. I think this is a perfect cold weather pub as it feels very snug and cosy and they have a good real ale selection you can work though as you wait out the winter months.

This is a nuts bar. From the outside, it doesn't look like its a pub, and the door normally looks like there's no-one home. But there is. The front bar has v little furniture which is usually a good job, cos its pretty popular. But there are benches and pews tucked in corners and alcoves so that you can get stuck in with the food, and take a look at the old photos on the wall.
You get a ticket like a raffle when you order, but the food is pretty hearty. My mates are fans of the breakfasts.
Part of the Mill Road pub crawl - see the other pubs nearby, and plan a route. They're all pretty good.
