Joe Pena's

I visited Joe Peña’s on a Monday during one of the cocktail happy hours. Despite being crowded and loud, there was a pleasant atmosphere. Due to the many customers and only two waitresses, service was somewhat slow. The biggest drawback of this place, however, was the food, which had little to do with authentic Mexican food and was clearly adjusted to the German taste. One should expect the food to contain an abundance of cream and cheese, mustard, few beans, and hardly any coriander and chilly peppers. For an average price of some fifteen euros per main dish I find the food far too expensive for the quality offered.
After having dined here, I had several cocktails. Whereas the food was mediocre, the cocktails were surprisingly good. Moreover, it was cocktail happy hour not just for a few hours, but all night long!
In short, dining at Joe Peña’s is not recommended, but drinking cocktails is.

I don’t know why this restaurant gets such good reviews. I went there with my husband yesterday. We were stuck in a corner about 1cm away from the next couple - this place is obviously set up to cater for large groups of binge drinkers. We ordered a Mai Tai(dishwater) and a pineapple margerhita (rocket fuel) and guacomole with nachos. The waitress did not tell us that we get nachos anyway, if we had known we would not have ordered a second portion. The guacomole was great, the nachos not. Main course, chicken burrito & vegetarian burrito were tasteless pamp. At least hubby was sozzled from his rocketfuel, so he did not make a big complaint in the restaurant. We will not go there again.
