By far the best cinema in Glasgow, it features a lovely little cafe to relax in and enjoy a drink before the feature. Independent and less mainstream pictures tend to be screened here, with films changing frequently so catch them quick or you’ll miss them. It often plays host to various foreign and international film festivals and many of the films shown are subtitled, excellent films that you could miss altogether if you stuck to the large multiplex cinemas. A trip to the GFT feels like a more personal cinema experience, Look out for films preceded by a talk from the director or followed by discussion groups. This cinema is a must for any film buffs out there.

With only two screens, the GFT is an art deco theater built in the late 1930s. Films shown here include independent, foreign, repertory and art house. The interior decor is old-fashioned - lots of wood and brass, a small but nicely-outfitted cafe/bar - Cafe Cosmo, and authentic mechanical ticket machines in the box offices. Cinema 1 is large and vaguely theatre-like and cinema 2 is small and somewhat more cramped. On the whole, a rather pleasant alternative to the other multi-screened cinemas on offer today. A must for those into independent cinema - the building and ticket office is beautiful.
