Review of Alexandra Palace from 29 April 2011

Alexandra Palace and park (AllyPally) is an oasis of calm in a very built-up part of north London, offering great views over the City and indeed all the way to the north Downs of Surrey and to Harold Hill in Essex. Until the 1970's horse racing took place on the circuit south of the palace - the track is still there. With a boating lake, playground, ice skating rink, pitch n' putt, skateboard park, cafes, animal enclosure and regular exhibitions in the palace itself, Allypally is a lovely park to spend a sunny day at. History buffs might like to know that BBC TV began it's regular broadcasting from here. The W3 bus route from Finsbury Park - Tottenham has stops within the park.

Review of Alexandra Palace from 7 February 2011

We went for an ice skating there on last Sunday and it was terrible.
They completely forgot about Health and Safety and let hundreds of people on at the same time. It was crazy. During my five minutes on the ice-rink I had few chances to cut off some fingers of some inexperienced skaters laying on the Ice.
I complained to the stuff but heard that it was just money making weekend and they don't have any official limits of how many people they can let in.

Review of Alexandra Palace from 13 September 2010

This seems like a really diverse venue, looking at all the reviews about events held here. I went for Secret Cinema, and lets face it those folks make an effort- even so I think half the charm was the amazing setting. It really is a stunning venue, set high up on the hills, overlooking the whole of the city.

Looking into the history I saw that the first public television transmissions were made in 1936 from the Palace (the People's Palace as it was known) and I love that it has played such a significant role in London's advancement.

I can't wait for fireworks night now, I'll be meandering up the grassy slope with all the others for the best view in town.

NBLoula I know! We lost Primrose Hill a few years back because of health and safety and now Ally Pally say they can't afford it. Maybe they should just buy cheaper fireworks?!

MissRachelle or pay? I'd pay £3 to watch them. Isn't that enough for some crackers? ;)

Review of Alexandra Palace from 22 December 2009

'Ally Pally', as the locals call it, is another gem of a park in London. I love it because you can also ice skate there in winter and row in summer... ok, its not big, but its there in the north of London, and the views are very nice too... Its also good for Fireworks night for the kids, and us adults who like that kind of thing!

Its not so beautiful as some other parks like Hamstead Heath and Parliament Hill... but definitely a place to visit...

Review of Alexandra Palace from 8 March 2009

Recently went to a bikeshow here and i must say that over the years i feel the place has gradually improved in both atmosphere and upkeep ,the buildings are as ever impressive as are the views from it and the staff on hand were very welcoming .A nice touch and an added bonus is the free parking available on site ,glad to see not everyone these days has preyed on the captive public parking areas and got greedy ,well done on that point, praise where praise is due.

Review of Alexandra Palace from 18 January 2009

The best fireworks display in the country! I managed to somehow receive VIP tickets to this year’s event and was treated to meal and drinks before the fireworks started. It was one of the best night’s out in London I’ve had and the fireworks were the best part of it. It seems like they’re endless - no wonder people flock to it from all over London. You can see other displays through London from the Palace on the hill and they all look lame in comparison…

I will be back every year!

Review of Alexandra Palace from 29 December 2008

This place has seen better days. It is a prime example of Victorian building on a grand scale. The size of Alexandra Palace is breathtaking. They don’t build them like that any more. It is a spectacular building both inside and out. It is worth coming here for the views alone. On a clear day, the views of London are amazing, stretching out to the horizon.
The building itself needs restoration and a massive injection of cash. The outer brickwork is in bad shape and you can see plants growing out of the walls in certain places. It is a sad sight indeed. Inside of the building is used as an ice-skating rink and a venue for antique fairs and various events, usually held at the weekends. A nice little pub caters to the visitors, always very busy at the weekends.
I can’t help feeling this magnificent building is dying a slow and painful death. It’s potential is vastly underused. Instead of wasting money on that ridicuolus Millenium dome, they should have invested it in restoring this monument to its former glory.

Review of Alexandra Palace from 19 November 2008

Ally Pally is a wonderful, large open space which is great for lazing around in in the summer. In the winter they put on a great fireworks display. There’s a fantastic farmer’s market on Sundays selling fresh, delicious, homemade foods, fresh bread, as well as selling great organic produce.

There are usually events/exhibitions taking place in the palace itself and it affords you some of the most amazing views of London.

Review of Alexandra Palace from 18 November 2008

This is an incredible space. The grounds are enormous, very well kept and really diverse. This used to be my regular running track and I miss it. The view from the bottom of the grounds looking up at the palace is nearly as good as the view of London from the Palace looking out.
All manner of people use the park, including some excellent play ground facilities for children.
The bar at the palace is only really fuctional, however you forget this as you sit out the front with a drink and gaze South over London. It’s quite a carnival atmosphere.
Inside the palace is great with soaring ceilings and impressive stained glass windows at either end.
It has a reputation as a top music venue - particularly for raves - and I believe that this is well deserved.

bluesofty My Aussie cousin in Fulham runs - he’s doing the Barcelona marathon in March.

Review of Alexandra Palace from 17 November 2008

I really don’t like this venue for gigs been to a few here now and there always been trouble at the gigs. I saw the darkness their and one of my mates got pushed over a tramped on. When I saw placebo there on their Meds tour the band was rubbish which is most unlike them, they didnt even come back out for an oncore. The other band I saw here was The Editors, and on that gig somone threw something on the stage which casued all the amps to go resutling in them having to miss the last 3 songs in the set. When bands play here now I do tend to miss it out unless its the last option as its hard to get to and drinks are very steep as well.

Review of Alexandra Palace from 17 November 2008

I’ve been to Alexander Palace for a geek event over the weekend and thought it is a geat place to visit. As well as the main building and surrounding park there is a boating lake and an ice rink too. Probably best to visit when there is an event such as the recent fireworks going on, although it does make for a good afternoon stroll in the grounds too. There are great views over London.

Review of Alexandra Palace from 17 November 2008

Went here for the fireworks, so must be worth describing that. I wasn’t sure which bus to get, I think I could have got straight there on the 132 or the 43, but there is also a direct train from Kings Cross which would have been quicker. There was the beerfest at the same time which was amazing. The Palace is a bit like the crystal palace must have been, a huge pleasure dome with a glass roof. The main hall is absolutely enormous and when I went had a fun fair and a british ale festival. (I tried a couple, Everard’s and something else) The beerfest in the west hall was wall to wall people, drinking a choice of two beers, erdinger weiss and paulaner at £4 each. You were meant to order from the beer girls, and presumably tip them hugely for the privilege. The queue at teh bar was ten deep. Likewise the queues for the german food were incredibly long.
The fireworks were brilliant. I managed to get onto the terrace just as policemen were rushing towards the gate saying 'who’s in charge? Shut this entrance now!’ The display went on for twenty five minutes, I’d had enough after twenty, and was pleased to find no queues at the lager bar, but they’d run out of the weiss beer, so i went to the food line. Unfortunately they’d run out of food as well, just a few sorry looking beefburgers left.
I walked back a different route through the park, all the way to crouch end, because I didn’t have enough money on my card, but it reminded me how nice the area is and how pleasant it would be to live there.

Review of Alexandra Palace from 18 April 2008

A really lovely building aplty named palace. All kinds of events take place here from patchwork festivals and farmers markets to ice hockey matches and full on raves. The Park area out front offers some of the most beautiful views available of London looking over virtually the whole of central London. On Fire works night it is particularly special as literally thousands gather to watch an impressive display with the added bonus of being able to see some of the equally impressive display in primrose hill and the rest of the cities fireworks too. In summer you can play pitch and put, go rowing on the lake and even go to the fun fair.

Review of Alexandra Palace from 28 March 2008

Have many a happy memory of this place from my childhood. Situated at the top of a hill with a great view of London, the palace is an impressive building, but is in need of a bit of a facelift. The large indoor ice rink is a great place to go with kids for a fun and energetic afternoon, or go yourselves and relive your youth. They also have varous other activities going on there all year round, so it’s a good idea to check the website and see if anything takes your fancy.
