Very difficult to judge this. When you walk in, it’s apparently just a nice cosy local pub, with a nice welcome, lots of wooden benches and tables, and friendly bar staff. When you then go through to your table for the meal, it’s like going Through The Looking Glass, as you end up in a very smart, open, spacious and formal dining room, with all the glass and cutlery and china you couldn’t imagine when sitting in the bar. It was also pretty warm. The Sunday lunch is OK – well-sized portions and freshly prepared. Probably the starters were less exciting than the mains, which were good for all of us. The service is overly fussy, something which we found hard to get used to after having sat in the bar area and never expecting formal dining like this. It may fall between the stool of not knowing quite what it is: a good local, or a smart food restaurant. Worth going, because the food IS good, but if you haven’t been before, be warned that the entrance off the street is just the waiting room for a completely other-wordly experience. It would have helped us a lot if we had known this beforehand!!
