Review of The Black Rose Tavern from 15 March 2011

Hi, i went to the Black Rose Tavern by mistake about a year ago and what a lovely mistake it was. I was meeting some people and i ended up in the wrong pub. As a result they all came and met me in the Black Rose. God what amazing food. Two of us had Burgers and they are absolutely amazing. One had Fish and Chips. This was huge but David ate it all. Two others chose the Special, Chicken Madras which was as good as going to the Indian. Now we always meet there as the food and the atmosphere is amazing. The pub has a little Geordie Woman as a cook and what a little character she is. We now go back at least once a fortnight for food and always a wee chat. She is always on when we go in and always got some funny quip for us. I think me personally have tried nearly everything on the Menu and never had any thing bad. I am quite amazed for such a small venue to have such high class food. Alls I can say is your very lucky to have such an amazing Chef.

Beware because some one is going to poach her from you. ha ha Thank you so much for your lovely pub.

Review of The Black Rose Tavern from 30 January 2011

While the bar itself has a very nice atmosphere my experience has been mixed. My husband and I went for lunch a few weeks ago and recieved a lovely welcome from the staff on duty, two young Irish girls who couldnt be more friendly or attentive. They took the time to chat briefly, adding a personal touch you would expect from your local. We both had fish and chips, from the girls recommendation, which was excellent. Since we had such a pleasant afternoon we decided to bring our friends who were over visiting last week. Sadly our second experience could not have been more different! The two staff serving, two older women, had none of the customer service skills of the previous girls. My husband stood at the bar for around five minutes while women chatted with their backs to us. The food on this occassion was more quantity than quality and the soup was definately not homemade as described - I have had cup a soups with more substance! After our less than delicious meal the table remained uncleared for twenty minutes, despite the bar being almost empty, at which point we decided to go elsewhere. I would go back again but would look through the window to see who was working before I decided to eat there.

Review of The Black Rose Tavern from 4 January 2011

WILL NEVER GO BACK, NOT RECOMMENDED.

Had most enjoyable meal about year ago. Went yesterday for a cheese burger and some drinks. Condiments were stuffed into a glass, and not very nicely presented. When our cheeseburgers came with a side salad and chips, the lettuce was old and i had to remove some brown leaves, not too happy about this, i proceeded to cut open the hamburger, and to my dismay, found that it was completely raw inside, as the blood was soaking into the roll (which also was not very fresh).

Feeling very nauseated, i took it back to the bar tender and told him that it was raw and i could not eat it, he did not give me an option to get my money back, did not even apologise, just gave it to the girl who was cooking. I had decided that i did not want the meal as i felt very sick at this point, so i asked for my money back. The bar tender then tried to short change me on my refund, and got irate when i told him that i had paid more than he wanted to give me back. The young girl who was doing the cooking even had the cheek to tell me that it was not that raw. Not the bar tender or the young lady cooking apologised at any point. Had i not cut open the meat, and just eaten it, i would probably become very ill.

Yeah, this place has true Edinburgh grit. Stopped off for a quickie on way to hotel and stayed for dinner and the friendly company. If you are wandering down Rose Street, give this place a shot.

Review of The Black Rose Tavern from 4 March 2010

It is a good rock pub, the most popular of this kind in the city centre on one of my favourite steets - Rose St. I imagined it to be a bit more spacious with a big screen for the karaoke but everything inside seemed tiny, except for the giant Corona bottle on the top shelf near a funny sign that says:tresspasing is forbidden, those who violate will be killed and the survivors too, which was spotted first by one of my colleagues - she immediately started plotting how to get the booty. I tried the red housewine, which was ok as well as the angus beef burger with cheese topping. Prices are average. I guess a perfect place for a night out of a group of close friends

I love this place, whether for a night out or an afternoon lunch.
The music is ace, and is the decor.
The food is tasty and very good value.
I don't go here enough :(

Review of The Black Rose Tavern from 6 September 2009

Arrived in here with a female friend after watching Norway give Scotland a drubbing. The only reason we went in was because she was desperate for the toilet. The fact we stayed for not far off 3 hours says it all!

Friendly punters - even though we look nothing like 'rockers’, good bar staff and cheap-ish drinks. I’ll be back!!!

If you are into hard rock you will love this palce and give it 5 stars I think I am only giving it 3 stars as it’s specialised and wont be to every ones taste, I like hard rock sometimes so if I am in the mood to listen to it I would go back to this tavern

Review of The Black Rose Tavern from 14 November 2008

This is a very friendly and relaxing bar. Play great rock music and has a great juke box. The food is quite good there too. The prices are around average for Edinburgh, but it is one of the most relaxed pubs to go. The staff are always polite and friendly, and you are served quickly whether you are just there for a drink or there for food. They have free wifi too, which is always an advantage for some people. If you like Rock Bars this is one of the best in Edinburgh. I have never seen any bother kick off in there.

Lovely place good tucker hot and quick. Lots of lovely bits to have a look at to pass the time until your drink sets in. Also has the most amusing vending machine in the loo well worth a look.

Only complaint I was rock maybe I am not as rock and roll as I thought…..

Review of The Black Rose Tavern from 29 August 2008

An excellent little bar to add to the 'rock bar’ scene in Edinburgh.

Despite the short time that it’s been open, it certainly does seem to have pulled in a few of the older punters on the 'scene’ as regulars - which is no mean feat. It’s certainly not an easy task to get folk to change their regular hangout!

If you’re hoping for a seat, you really do need to get there early on in the night as this place really does get busy. There’s a little bit of outdoor seating available during the day if you’re lucky enough to catch Edinburgh when it’s sunny and were hoping to make the most of the rays.

Oh, and as a piece of advice…avoid the shooters. Especially the absinthe one. Evil. I need say no more. I managed to lose an hour of my night after drinking one of these last time.

podding_about i love absinthe! humm

Review of The Black Rose Tavern from 24 July 2008

Great little Rock Bar, good jukebox, well decorated with some fabulous bits and pieces that you could only expect to find in a rock bar :) Drinks are reasonably priced, food too so i believe, although i have never had any. Friendly atmosphere, friendly staff. Friendly clientele too. Good Rock Bars are hard to find, so this one i would definately recommend :)

A great price for Rockers to grab some food. The prices of the food are quite good, the food itself is always nice. The staff are very friendly, and the music and ambience great if you are a rocker or metalhead. The place itself is a little small, but it adds to the atmosphere.

Review of The Black Rose Tavern from 26 March 2008

A great rock bar with friendly staff and good food at reasonable prices. Which for a major city is quite amazing. Even my mother loves it. The only downside to this pub is they DO NOT have a childrens licence so over 18s only, can be seen as a positive as well I suppose. Wednesday night Karaoke is very popular and the quiz is fun.
