Compliment
Knitnut (11-05-2008)
What a treasure trove! Appearances can be very deceptive and that was certainly the case here - a very small shop front that gave way to a large, quaint store filled to the brim with colour and texture. The first section is knitting yarn, displayed by type and with knitted swatches hanging alongside the skeins so you can see exactly how the knitted fabric drapes. There is a vast range of colours and the yarn is sold by weight - the info labels give an idea of the yardage per kilo but the yarns are not classified as “4 ply”, “DK” etc so swatching will be essential. There are lots of knitted-up garments (from La Droguerie’s own design books) and they all seemed very stylish compared to what’s available in the UK. The shop also offers a ball-winding service but I don’t know if this is free or not.
The rest of the shop is given over to haberdashery - everything from buttons to needles. The choice here was almost overwhelming; I have never seen such a huge and varied display of all those essential bits and pieces (beads, artificial flowers, feathers, etc etc) that make all the difference to a hand-made project. There really was an enormous amount of “stuff” here and I could have spent hours looking had the shop not been just about to close.
The staff were very helpful and efficient and I would highly recommend this shop to anyone with an interest in knitting and/or other handicrafts.
