The market is still going strong, Gilgamesh has now been well established for ages, and I have finally run out of excuses not to go ... we were a small group celebrating a friend's birthday recently, starting with some bubbly on a Saturday lunchtime.
The place is massive, but luckily attracts a steady flow of visitors. You can just imagine how packed both the bar and restaurant become in the evening, but we quite enjoyed the quieter experience mid-day. The entire place is decorated in elaborate wooden carvings (which mask the rather ugly structure the restaurant is located in which you only really notice when looking up at the ceiling, or getting lost on your way to the loos). You enter via an escalator which takes you to a rather formal reception desk - leaving via a massive spiral staircase decorated with a beautiful tree of life is a final highlight in contrast.
Another advantage of booking a table for lunch is the set-price menu. You can find cheaper Thai green curry elsewhere, but hardly any better. You can choose between a meat and vegetarian option - we were very happy that they allowed us to mix and match. On the whole, service was attentive, professional and friendly, and we felt very well looked after.
The meat starters were probably the better choice with a selection of sushi, beef salad and scallops beautifully served in martini glasses. The vegetarian selection consisted of spring and summer rolls as well as tempura - all delicious, but just not as exciting. We all opted for Thai green curry, and it was exceptionally good as was the side order of roasted squash. Personally I would never have teamed this delicate curry with egg fried rice, but hey - half of our group actually loved this protein overkill.
While many places overdo the desserts, Gilgamesh had another treat up its sleave. We all managed to squeeze in the beautifully presented trio of chocolate/lemongrass creme brulee, fennel shortbread and mandarin sorbet.
We finished with a seletion of coffees (not included in set menu) and were impressed when asked whether we'd prefer hot or cold milk with our Americanos.
A perfectly rounded afternoon. Just some tiny points short of 5 star (all the behind the scenes stuff, like badly signposted restrooms, or no loo paper - no excuse at this price range).

"Set in the heart of Stables Market in Camden, Gilgamesh is a critically acclaimed pan-Asian restaurant, hosted by celebrated Head Chef Ian Pengelley".
The stunningly beautiful restaurant has a contemporary style, perfectly fused with the exotic imagery and mystique of the Babylonian era. Gilgamesh leaves guests in awe of its opulent decor, entertainment and unparalleled dining experience.
I decided to treat my partner to a birthday treat and as I’d walked past Gilgamesh many times in the past and wondered at what lay up that magic staircase, I had found the perfect excuse.
One dish that really stood out for me was the Hoba Miso Chilean Seabass marinated with sweet plum (see above photo). Every mouthful was an utter delight. I washed it down with a beautiful cocktail.
We also enjoyed the Lamb Chops, char-grilled with a mustard miso dressing. The menu is quite extensive and I look forward to returning to try some more of their mouth watering delights.

Whether you go for drinks after work or take your lady there for lunch or dinner ( friday night is the best for dinner reservations) you will be totally impressive!
A bit pricey, but the menu is extensive and the food is top notch from a foodies perspective :-)
Only reason I am giving it 4 stars is the fact that they menu hasn't really changed in the last two years, if they update it its a 5 star again for me.

I have only been here for drink so can’t comment on the food, but WOW, this place is amazing, it’s interior is fantastic, great place to take somebody you want to impress! It’s a little pricey, but worth it!

What a great experience! We went there last week and enjoyed a selection of dishes.
Our first thoughts were…WOW
After coming up an escalator into a babylon world like nothing I have experienced before! Especially not for dining in.
Once seated we pondered over the vast menu and our order proved that our eyes were bigger than our stomachs.
The food, although there was a lot of it, was fabulous! It was very impressive and each course had its own specific taste and authenticity.
I would recommend it to anyone. Weather it is for a business lunch or a family meal it has everything for everyone!

I’m pleased this reataurant is still open. It was closed on our last visit, but is now up and running again. We have only visited lunch times when we have a bottle of wine and watch life passing by at the market. The decor hasn’t changed in umpteen years, but I guess that will never happen, and why should it, the glamorous restaurant with its contemporary style, perfectly fused with the exotic imagery and mystique of the Babylonian era. I would like some excuse to book the VIP room, with the right entertainment I would think it would be on ’ell of a night.

I ate at Gilgamesh last night with my girlfriend and it was a typically great experience, having been there once or twice now and having had a good experience each time I was hoping for a repeat performance and they certainly delivered. The venue itself really captures the imagination with its intricacy and finery whilst the food is very delicately flavoured without being bland, really really tasty. The portion sizes were also surprisingly generous compared to the quailty as one would usually expect the quantity to decrease proportionately as the quality increases, as is the case in most places broadly speaking but not here. The service was spot on, the staff were attentive without breathing down your neck throughout the meal and we both felt looked after and not smothered which is exactly what I look for in good restaurant service. We both highly enjoyed ourselves and I would suggest that everyone (of every age) needs to go there at least once, as for me I will be going back soon!

I visited Gilgamesh recently with a friend and thought it was fantastic. The decor to start with was amazing, we didn’t know what to expect so I was blown away! We had a lovely table and the staff were all very pleasant and helpful. We ordered a selection of dishes including sushi rolls, crispy squid and Dim Sum and we enjoyed everything. I had no complaints over the whole evening, great atmosphere and a yummy cocktail selection!

My second time at Gilgamesh and I enjoyed it just as much as the first time. Great sushi dishes and the staff are very welcoming. Hoping to return for a friend's birthday in the near future.

Gilgamesh is easily summed up by the experience you have going in, and then exiting, the building. Going up the escalators you are whisked up past a world of carved wood and luxury, whilst leaving takes you down a winding staircase into one of Camden markets dimly lit corners. Its feasible that you could up mugged twice in one evening as result of eating here.
Before the baiting begins, let’s just clear up one thing; the food here is actually very good. Of all of the dishes that we tried, nothing disappointed. Amongst them Mushroom Tempura was wonderfully light and crispy, whilst Stock Duck moist and flavourful. Good so far, but more on the duck tales later.
My issue is that much more than nice food is needed to have a nice restaurant, and that’s where Gilgamesh falls way short. My girlfriend is a thing of slender beauty so when I tell you that tables had to be moved in order for her to trudge approximately a marathon away to the ladies, I hope you understand how close the tables were packed. I am a paying customer, not a battery chicken, and as much the next tables dinner looks nice, I’d rather not have it on my lap. Service was brisk to the point of unwelcoming, and included several faux-pas: when I ask for the desert menu, I would like the desert menu, and not a cocktail menu for a bar upstairs that I have no intention of going to. All a bit amateur sadly.
And the duck?! Oh dear. I would have had no problem with paying for 6 additional pancakes had I not already been told that the two additional pancakes I requested would be supplied free of charge. I paid of course, as I’m English and therefore far too polite to make a scene in public, but it sums up Gilgamesh perfectly. The whole place is just a table-turning, money making machine, designed to chew up and spit out customers into the back streets of town. Much like the stairs on the way out, it’s a mugging if there ever was one.
