This place hasn't changed since I was a kid in the mid 60's and it's still run by the same lovely couple. I moved out the area 20 years ago and went back to the old place that served me well after a few teenaged pints. sadly the quality has gone down hill. I think maybe times have caught up with the old place. But I for one will be really sad to see one of the last real fish and chips shops to go.

I was sick of Spicy Perfect Tasty Halal American Fried Chicken which is the standard fare in this neck of the woods and thus set out one Friday to find an honest to God old style fish n'chip shop. I eventually stumbled upon the Victoria Fish Bar. Achingly melancholic, I felt terrible after I left with my fish'chip in hand. The food was by no means bad but not great. What you would expect from a down at heel chip shop but the place was just so sad. Run by a pleasant but silent old couple who seem to have been there since the dawn of time. She wears an apron, he wears his white fish fryers coat. The decor (red benches, turquoise walls) hasn't changed since the 60s: old posters promoting fish, a till that looks more like a type writer, everything wrapped in paper. They sit on stools waiting for people to come in which seems to be seldom. I get the feeling they want to retire but can't. Or own the building and have nothing else to do. The world changed around them. People preferring to cook or eat well rather than greasy fish and chips. Youths preferring to hang out in chicken shops until the early hours.
