Review of Zoom Cafe from 16 April 2012

I loved Zoom. The food was absolutely delicious, we had the prawns and the scallops as starters and the tuna and duck breast as mains. Could not fault the food in any way. Beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked. The staff were very warm and welcoming and we had a great evening. Thank you to you all.

Is there a rule stating that I cannot write about a restaurant I own when I have eaten there. If you can review it, so can I. I have the same rights as you. I am thanking the chefs and waitress for their great work. It was amazingly delicious and as I said, the service was warm and friendly. I could not have asked for more.
I meant what I wrote about you, maybe you should take a bit of notice of my reply to you.

I’ll preface this review by saying you really can’t fault the food at this place – I have had nothing but good meals the 3 times I have eaten here.

The service and demeanor of who I presume to be owner, however, just rubs me the wrong way each and every time I go to this place. The first time I ate lunch here with a girlfriend, we put down say £40 for a £32 bill, expecting change…and nothing came back. When we asked, it turned into this whole ordeal where she couldn’t remember how much we gave her, saying she thought it was a tip (generous one at that! the nerve.), then didn’t believe us when we told her we were owed X back, etc. After literally arguing for about 20 min, we finally came to some kind of agreement, essentially splitting the difference or something – mostly just so we could leave. Clearly not about the money, just the principle. Annoying.

Another recent visit for lunch, I was told I couldn’t order the “starter portion” of one of the items on the menu – had to order the full entree size or 2 starters. This would be fine if this was a standing policy, however on my previous 2 visits, I had ordered the starter portion (only 1) of the same exact dish on both occasions with no problems. I asked if it was a new requirement, giving her the benefit of the doubt that it may have just changed in the time since I had been last (mind you, this was all of about 2 wks since my last visit) and was told “no, it has been like this forever.” Yea, right.

All in all, I just feel like the owner of this place tries to screw you over, so I will be taking my business elsewhere. Unfortunate, too, because the food is quite good. If you can put up with being jerked around, then go here, otherwise, there are PLENTY of other places worth your money, and appetite, in this town!

Firstly, the owner does not try to screw you over.
I am the owner who you have never met, and there is a policy of not allowing people to just order a starter. This is unfortunately been implemented to deter the soup and tap water brigade. I am running a proper restaurant, not a caf. I dont assume you would go into Gordon Ramseys restaurants and behave in the same manner?
Why dont you have the courage to ask for the owner, who would have explained the situation to you. As you have noticed you have been allowed to just order starters on previous occasions, and the waitresses have bent the rules to accomodate you. Maybe you just did not realise this.
Do you write reviews about your doctors screwing you over for £200.00 for a 15 minute consultation, or your plumber charging you £100.00 for a callout charge of 20 minutes, or all the other people who have been screwing you.
Does someone come to your place of work and review your every move. On good days and on bad days. Think about it !!!

About the change aspect to your bill. I think there has been a misunderstanding. The restaurant is absolutely scrupulous in its honesty. Maybe the waitress honestly thought you had left a tip. Accept my apologies for this aspect of your review. A tip of this size is not uncommon at all.

I’ve been there once, it was really pleasant! The staff was quite polite and helpful, and the food was delicious!
I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good restaurant in this area.

Very good, basic cafe fare. Grilled tuna, roasted chicken, burgers. For starters we had chicken liver, asparagus, and calamari. All were good - but the roasted chicken with sweet potato mash and french beans was the standout. I def. return to try other things on the menu. The atmosphere is nice, relaxed and fun.

Relaxed menu and venue. Emphasis on good food here at good prices. Quite upmarket and requires booking. If you don't book there are plenty of other places in Marylebone High Street to eat.
