So, you go to Edinburgh and discover that there’s a massive basalt hill right in the middle of town. You do some research and discover that its crown land, has been so for time immemorium, and that in the late middle ages it served as the King’s deer hunting park. Oh, and it has medieval hillforts on it. And a ruined Abbey.
Basically, a trip to Edinburgh simply isn’t complete without a walk up this amazing feature. There are numerous routes to the top through a suprisingly wild highland environment of gorse and heather - however, whichever way you choose (coming from the east probably requires the least exertion) there awaits at the top an unparalleled panoramic view of the Scottish capitol. Go up on a clear day with a picnic and take in the sights.
